Critical power loss when boosting

Post by 94Sport »

Hey guys, very new to the forum world. I own a 94 legacy sport, EJ22T. I broke recirculating hose on the infamous 90° elbow going into the turbo. I patched it best I could by stitching it and sealing it with JB Weld and then more with silicone. May not be perfect but it's close. My problem comes from somewhere within that spectrum I believe. I think I'm running lean and I've thrown codes for the air intake valve/circuit. Anyone have problems with the air control valve? Or do I have a leak? Image

On a cold start it idles around 2500 or 3000 rpms but boosts perfectly with tons of power. As soon as my heat gauge starts to register it drops to normal idle but if I give it any more than 2 or 3 psi (set to peak at 11 but never makes it there) I start missing.

Now when that happens I lose boost. I don't know if the missing is causing the loss of boost or if the loss of pressure is causing the missfire.

I'm gearing up to put a td04 on in place of my vf11 but I want to know I don't have any major issues before I start tearing it apart. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Did you have this problem before the turbo inlet hose broke? If not, I suspect your patch isn't holding that well. The reason you're ok when cold is the engine is getting more fuel due to start/warm up enrichment and is compensating for the un-metered air coming into the engine.

If this problem was around before the turbo inlet broke then it could be related to a bad coolant temp sensor.

Have you tried resetting the ECU and verify the idle air control valve is the only code that comes back?

Resetting as in disconnecting the battery? I'm going to try and make a new one from silicone parts because as you probably know this part is very hard to find.

Yes, either disconnecting the battery or pulling fuse 14 for an hour or so with the car off.
