disable ABS?

Post by TireIron »

ok so when somone replaced a stud on one of my hubs they totally messed the tone ring, right now i dont have the time or money to replace it and i was wondering how to fully disable the abs so i have normal brakes (and actually after driving cars without abs for years i like it better not having it...).

Pull the ABS fuse out from the underdash fuse box.

The ABS fuse should be at the fuse box inside the engine bay, when you open the box and you will see ABS on the sticker underside on the cover, it should be a big red with 40A on it, take it out and your dash will turn on the ABS light but it will be fine. When you put the fuse back then the light will go off.!

weee i guess i get to live with the ABS light from now on unless i do some serious reading of wireing diagrams and figure out how to fool the system into thinking everyhtings fine... ha like im that enthusiastic to get rid of a light.

a little piece of electrical tape in the right spot will take care of it.

From a look at the diagrams, I'd say disconnecting the 12-pin round connector from the hydraulic unit underhood should make the light go away. You might want to cover the exposed connectors up with tape or something just to keep the terminals from corroding just in case.

If I drive around with the ABS fuse pulled, does that cause any problems? Are there any safety issues? Does it do anything funky? Or does it really behave just like a normal car without ABS?

It will behave like a conventional car without ABS. That was a huge engineering problem when ABS was first designed: how to make sure you wouldn't lose braking functionality when the ABS system failed. If you disable the ABS computer the hydraulic unit is completely inert in the braking circuits.

That's good to know. It might be benefitial to turn off the abs if I ever autox the car. Has anyone found that they like ABS during auto-xing?

In RallyX, I find the ABS maddening. I haven't autoX'd enough to make an informed opinion.

Why not run what the STi guys do?

An ABS By-pass switch. Flip a switch, ABS = off, ABS light = off.

Flip ABS switch back on and everything is normal. This is what I plan on doing.

I used to have the diagram on my computer, but I think I deleted it (never thinking I'd use it, lol).
