Where to tap sensor/sender for oil pressure gauge?

Post by boostjunkie »

I just ordered an oil pressure gauge but am wondering where the best place would be to tap the sensor sender into?

I swear the pressure gauge was mounted under the alternator. If so just get a "T" for it and connect yours as well.

Yeah, you could tee off where the stock sender goes if there's enough room. I believe the threading is 1/8" BSPT.

Something like this might be useful:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 2465562021

The sender actually threads into a bushing that threads into the block. There's another spot near the back of the block that has the same threads. So if you get another one of those bushings (it's 1/8" BSPT to M18x1.5 if I remember correctly) you could put it in the other spot to avoid teeing.

Try to keep your threading straight -- 1/8" BSPT and 1/8" NPT kind of thread together but really shouldn't be mixed.

I think you can thread one into the other but you have to seal it with teflon tape or something and you can't thread them the other way around. I can never remember - I used to just order the correct parts.

where is the port on the back of the block??
i installed a mech oil guage, but the sender unit was to big to fit under the alternator. i just used some 1/4" oil line and some barbed fittings.

dagsy - I don't remember exactly where it is... It's on the top of the block towards the rear though. I think it's got an 8mm allen head.

Steve - You can thread 1/8" BSPT male fittings into 1/8" NPT female ones without damage or leaks if you use enough sealant. Ditto for 1/2" and 3/4" threads. Other than that, BSPT and NPT are incompatible. In any case, you always need to use dope or teflon tape with tapered threads.

vrg3 - that's it! That's the way I thought it was because it was the opposite of what I usually had lying around to work with.

Some interesting information provided guys, as always! I'll have to go to the dealer this morning and try and find that part. I found the part numbers on nasioc.

Well, I got the adapter piece from Stohlman today. About $8-9 for the part. They didn't have the gasket in stock but it looks like a regular crush washer will work.

Hopefully, our blocks have the same provision as the wrxs.

I looked on my engine today and saw the plug. It's on the block underneath the IAC valve and a little towards the passenger side. It's basically in a position symmetrical to that of the stock sender.

I'd like to install an oil pressure gauge too; I'm thinking of running my 1/8" NPT tap through a stock sender adapter to retap the BSPT thread into an NPT thread. If I remember right, BSPT taps remove a little less material than NPT taps, so this should work.

yeah, that's the one i thought it might be as well. will be good as the sender unit i have will screw straight in with plenty of room around it.

That's a good idea for the retap, vrg3. I'll keep you guys updated when I get started on this project. It's a little too cold down here.

That's weird. It's a little too warm up here. How'd it get reversed?

What kind of gauge are you going to install, boostjunkie?

It's actually a cheap ebay ricer gauge, placeholder until I can get a hold of my friend's Greddys *crossing fingers*

I just want something better than the oil pressure warning light and stock water temp gauge. With everything acting up lately with my waterpump and all, I figure it'd be better to have some preventive measure for future "incidents."

I was awfully happy I had that a/f gauge installed on my car when I was having those run-lean problems.

boostjunkie...
can you tell us more about your a/f gauge? Is it attached to a stock o2 sensor? Which one? what kind of accuracy/info do you get from it?
thanks...

Might be a stupid sounding question, but I here some people say that it only works at idle, others say only at full throttle, etc,

It works the same as the autometer one I installed on my/your car (you still have that gauge in there right)?

Yes, they're useless for tuning, but when the gauge reads ALL THE WAY RED, I know something's wrong.
