As i've said before, boxers just sound awesome, turbo or not, with a big exhaust. I still maintain that the meanest sounding Subaru i've ever heard was a friend's 2.5RS with equal length headers and a full 2.75" exhaust no cat and Magnaflow straight-through.

I bet the last two cars mentioned lost power overall. You sacrifice performance for sound.

how does one get that really low bass type sound at like 1300 rpm?? Will a magnaflow muffler give it that sound?

ciper: on the contrary, that 2.5 was faster than my car, and when he removed the headers he says he easily lost 20hp instantly.

20 hp at high RPM, Im talking about overall. Its no fun to drive a car with less low end power.

I recently installed the Cobb equal length headers on my RS and it made a noticeable diff. in power throughout the range with no loss in the beloved low-end (butt-dyno method) but the cool boxer sound was sacrificed a little since the equal length seems to alter the note quite a bit. My Legacy actually sounds better now since I need to replace the worn-out cats soon... :D

3" is just fine for all subaru cars that are of 2 liters and up, especialy for the turbocharged models. on the n/a models, as long as you don't have stupid and lame backfireing, more power to ya

I think you are wrong.

Besides, saying something is fine is different from saying its right.

Hafta agree with ciper here. I'd rather have an exhaust that gave as much low-end torque as possible, even if I didn't even hear it.

You are wrong. Sorry.

Exhaust velocity is key. To large, velocity decreases and you LOSE power. To small, velocity is physically maxxed and you increase backpressure (bad).

Think of it like a straw. Blow through the straw. Imagine blowing through a larger straw. It would take a lot more effort to get the same flow, eh? Now put a kink in the straw. You have to blow pretty damn hard to get the velocity to be the same.

The first instance is low velocity. You need a lot of exhaust to produce the most efficient velocity. Turbo cars make this velocity, N/A cars don't.

The second situation is backpressure. Backpressure it the enemy of exhaust systems.

The key?

As little backpressure as possible with as high velocity as possible. 3" pipes seem to give this balance on a turbo car. On an N/A car, you are going to have low backpressure, but low velocity as well. You could run a 2.25" pipe on an N/A and have little to no increase in backpressure and an increase in velocity.

There are formula's out there to determine the exact pipe diameter based on a series of factors (as well as ratings). General consensus is, 2.75" to 3" on a Turbo car.

I feel that for an NA ej22 2.25 is the best choice. Possible 2.5 if you are always above 4krpm.
