Suggestions about brakes

Post by sullione »

Hello all, I need some suggestions for brakes. It's about time I have them done. I will be replacing the front rotors because I'm getting shudder again. I had them turned a few years ago. My questions are: what brand should I replace them with...maybe plain Brembos? What brake pads should I get? I will be replacing all the pads. Should I replace the rear rotors since the car is so old (91 AWD) and it's the original equipment? And finally should I replace the brake lines with the Steel braided ones since their original too and the pedal feels kinda soft? Please help me with my issues.

my answer is influenced significantly by the fact that i'm cheap. I would keep turning the rotors till they get too thin, then i'd get the plain brembo's. people seem to like the axis metalmasters, but they don't come with shims - so i'd get subaru pads. i've heard those braided hoses don't last as long so i'd stick with rubber. maybe bleeding the brakes will help that pedal feel. Why spend more then you have to when the stock brakes work perty dern good, i've always been impressed with em anyway

As far as the Axxis Pads go, can I go to an auto parts store and buy new shims? I just checked ebay and someone has some axxis pads for $90 with free shipping. Is this a good deal?

The brembo rotors work fine for me. I use napa pads. Lifetime warranty, guarenteed not to squeal. They also stop the car fine.

Thanks to all who have replied. Okay, so new Brembos and plain factory pads all the way around...correct? Where's a good place to get the factory brake pads?

I'd suggest getting a set of Carbotech Bobcat's. Kinda harsh (not rotor eaters though) and grippy as a bastard. I drove a WRX with a set of Bobcats, and I've gotta say, that thing stopped on a DIME and gave 9 cents change.

My next pads (when I do the WRX front upgrade), after the stock pads all are gone, I'm gonna do some Carbotech Bobcats. Only downside is that they are around $90 for the rears, and $90 for the fronts.

I run bobcats on the front of my wrx.....nice!!! low dust and neck breaking stops. They feel 100 times better then stock pads. I went cheap on the rears, I put axis (sp?) pads on. They work fine but give off a lot of dust.

is it safe for me to assume that I have 1 pot brakes in the front, my car is non-turbo. I ask because at Mach V's website, this is what's listed for my car. Also, do these Bobcats have the shims that I'll need or must I buy more shims. Would I get shims from the stealership also?
