Fuel Gauge WTF?! OMGz!

Post by JasonGrahn »

so my fuel gauge started something new the other day: It only goes up to half tank.

I filled my tank w/ 11 gallons, drove down the road, found that it only showed half. "Well that can't be true" I thought to myself, "I just put in 11 gallons!"

Thoughts on a process to troubleshoot this or a method of solving?

Thanks.

the sender on either side of the fuel tank might be bad. Try unplugging the pass side and seeing if it stays the same?

yeah....the senders get corroded. I think it's more common on the 95-99 legacies. You can take the senders out, and usually buff the piece of copper/brass or whatever so that the corrosion goes away and things are working again.

Could that also cause my fuel guage to sway all around when it gets down to a quarter of a tank?

Exactly the same problem my 91 turbo friend is having. I'll let him know about that...

tell that guy that if he needs more information to post. Also I heard that the driver side of the tank is for the top half of the gauge and the pass side is for the bottom half (the senders at least), but who knows how true that is.

I just replaced the sender on mine (only one) and it was a very easy job. I tried cleaning it off and reinstalling it before replacing, but that did no good. There were no apparent problems from the outside.

Could bad senders also be the reason why my gauge moves around when i go downhill? If i take a steep downhill (road) at 1/4 tank, when i reach the bottom, or somewhere flat and level, the gauge will read E. however, with acceleration and movement, the gauge will go back to what it should be... this is annoying --would new fuel senders solve this as well?

Thanks,

the senders are located towards the rear of the tank. if you are very low on gas, and your light comes on, then you drive up a hill, the light will fade until you level out again. Spirited acceleration has the same affect on you gas gauge

That's asuming that your fuel light even goes on when you're low.
Apparently a lot of them will only come on when you're (literally) about to run out of gas.

I think they all have lights, whether or not they work is the question. When mine did, it would come on when there was about 4 gallons remaining.

that is quite possibly the best picture ever used to show where something is located.

My 91L had it. lights up orange. Mine never lights until my needle passes the empty mark. I can usually drive for about 40-50 miles before i really NEED gas.
