when replacing the water pump must you remove timing belt and what is the easyiest wayy to get the pulley off and easiest way to accoplish this task?

Yes the timing belt needs to come off. The pulley bolt can be a bear to remove. If you car is MT then stick the trans in 5th, pull the ebrake and have some one hold press the brakes while you remove the bolt. You will need a 22MM socket plus a breaker bar and a long handle extenion. I had a 4 foot one and still had to put all my weight on it. If it's auto then you need to lock the crank or buy subaru's tool to remove the pulley. You can "lock" the crank by inserting a screw driver into the whole that access the torque converter bolts or somehow lock one of the cam pulley. I don't recommend either method.

i have done the scredriver method. works just fine. but you need help. the teeth are very strong.

Use a round breaker bar to stick in the access panel. It works fine, and I've done it several times by myself.

are you guys describing how to get the crank shaft pulley off? if not how do you get that off?

Yes, once you have the bolt out, use a puller or just slowly "walk" the pulley off the crank nose.

the timing belt was replaced 6000 miles ago. there was no coolant leakind near the timing belt just driping at the bottom of the pump. since i am takeing the belt off must it be replaced?

In a short answer. No. If it aint broke, dont fix it. I have taken mine off and on about 4 plus times now in the last 5-6 k miles.

Pull the engine and use an impact gun

I brace the pulley with a strap wrench against the immortal alternator pulley.

first time doing this and last. car wont start i think i f@#% up the timing can i fix it or should i take it to the dealer?

are the cam sprakets and crank all marked? if so all i need to do is line the lines from the belt with those marks?
