1986 GL-10 5sp... should I go for it?

Post by Fugazi »

Alright, so I have a chance to get an 86 GL10 turbo 5sp with all the extras for only $1000! How are these bad boys as far as reliability? I've got two years of school left before the steady paycheck, so I really need to know if theres anything to look out for.

From what he says it really checks out mechanically as far as no leaks or oil burning

No problem. They're like bricks. My brother had one with 2XX,XXX miles, eventually had it rebuilt but it was a tank. He took out 120 feet of fence with that puppy with only broken suspension components on 1 corner and a couple dents.

[edit] his wasnt a turbo, but he used to rave about how reliable the turbo model's engines were, and how badly he wanted one[/edit]

Waaah! I want it! Especially if it's a wagon!

There are two major things to check for on EA82T's: 1) oil leaks and 2) blown headgaskets or cracked heads.

1) It's going to leak oil somewhere, if he says it has NO oil leaks, he's lying. If the valves tap, the oil pump needs resealing, I can help out with that.

2) EA82T's have rather insufficient cooling, so if it has ever overheated (can happen from something as simple as a bad T-stat), the headgaskets and possibly the heads are in question. If you've the chance and ability, wouldn't hurt to do a compression test on it.

Also check for rust. 80's Soobs love to rust.

Good luck!

Sweet! I'm having a friend drive up to check it out this weekend, if it looks good, shes mine. I'll post an update if I get her. This has been my dream car since high school, silly I know, but even more so since its a stick.

I liked the gl-10's. I'd go for it. I bought my '91 for only 1k too but it had/has some issues.

I could not give away my 87GL, I ended up having to pay 25 dollars to have a yard come pick it up.
