Diamond packs, note what years you know has them

Post by ciper »

I know that 1995 and 1996 with the 2.2 had the diamond packs we like so much. I also grabbed one from a 94 NA AT Sedan.

edit: Found this accidentally http://www.motec.com.au/drawings/m34.pdf

In case any of you dont know what it looks like Legacy777 site has a great image of one, its the last image in the Engine section

My 97 Legacy GT had one.

I found one on a 1990 5MT sedan. I don't recall if it was Japan- or USA-built.

The first gen MT legacies had the diamond packs. I'm sure there was some disparety, but for the most part, the MT models got the diamond coil packs.

legacy22...the white injectors you are describing might be white from age. Mine are pink, but just barely. Yours might just be super faded.

Ya I had thought that too.But when others talked of how bright the pink was I started wondering. It doesn't look like they've ever been changed. so maybe they are. It's good to know yours aren't real bright, gives me hope :)

My coilpack don't say hitachi or diamond either...just the little logo thingie people talked about. As for my injectors...they are grey.
thanks
Micum
PS: Has anyone here pulled their injectors? I pulled mine and there are two orings that go onto the injector, and with the bottom oring, there was a white hard plastic ring. The company that cleaned my injectors had never seen such a thing, and didn't think it should be on there, what do y'all think? And I have this black rubberish square cut ring (a oring w/ square cross section) that sits inside the rail, on top of the hole for the injector nozzle, below the fuel side feed. The injector sits on top of the square ring...any idea where to get these? could it be replaced with an oring? Are different sized injectors similar enough that other subaru EJ engines with side feed injectors might have the same or similar rail and square cut ring? I have a JDM legacy GT turbo EJ20G...
Sorry for the long repetitive kinda off topic ps, I'm desperate, my car is in peices!

From what I understand, both coil pack types are made by Hitachi. The Diamond ones say "Diamond" on them, the non-Diamond ones don't.

stant093 - The Diamond pack is supposed to give a bit stronger spark. I've heard someone say "25% stronger" but I don't know how that was measured.

I just pulled a diamond pack of my friends 92 legacy 5mt parts car...but it was mounted "upside down". The label that says diamond was facing the windsheild. I just put it in my Legacy turbo...I wasn't sure what way to mount it. Does it matter how it sits? Would this affect plug wires, ie would you have to switch around the wires?
thanks

Mount it with the wiring harness connector on the passenger side.

The BC/BF Diamond packs had the label sticker on the "aft" side of the pack; the GC/GF/BD/BG Diamond packs had the sticker on the "fore" side. The Diamond part numbers are the same, though.

Sounds right. The last number is a serial number or something.

$25 seems like a good deal if it's in good shape. If it has any corrosion or anything on it you might want to sand that off and then paint it.

Yeah, my 91 MT has one, I was also confused about the label facing the windshield, worried about spark timing. But they just put the label on the back of the coilpack, for some odd reason. I've since replaced it with a new one, yes new from the dealer, $80 sumthin in case you're wondering...

You can't really put it on wrong. The correct way to put it on is with the wire harness connector on the passenger side of the intake manifold, as vrg3 stated, but even if you tried to mount it the wrong way, the fact that the wire harness shouldn't be able to reach to the other side should give you a hint ;) ...

I know this is an old thread, but was reading up on why the diamond is desireable. My MT NA '90 made in USA has a Diamond pack. My Auto Turbo '92 engine does not. Seems to be consistent with the auto/MT theory...

Matt - Yeah, I think that's right. The parts catalog lists one number for non-turbo 5MTs (22433AA370) and another number for turbos and automatics (22433AA360).

Mark - You might as well put it on if it's just lying around. The Diamond pack has a different turns ratio in the coils so it generates a higher spark voltage.
