Here's my idea...

Post by J-MoNeY »

So, here's the deal. My father doesn't want me to get an exhaust due to the fact that it's "noisy" and he hates mods. So, I thought to myself, what's a good way to do the exact opposite of what he want's with out him knowing. Then it dawned on me. A dump tube. Not just a tube that comes from the turbo and bends down. Oh no. An electronic one. One where I can retain my stock exaust, but splice a electronic dump tube in, and open it when I need it. Now i need your opinions. Good or bad and why?

I hope if you do that you have it plumbed out the side or something so you're not just blowing out hot exaust directly under your car.

The air rushing under the car will take care of the gases...

It's common sense not to have it open while you are at idle.

You mean an electronic cutout.

Good idea and bad idea.

If you've got a stock downpipe, don't bother. It's not worth it.

If it's a good downpipe with stock DP back, then go for it.

Be careful though, if it's a good downpipe (that is also cattless), you'll shoot flames. I know, I started the car with JUST the DP on, and when I revved it, anything above 4k and it'd spit a flame out.

I need to get it to do that out the back now too!

stealth mod?

Sounds like a cut out, to me. JC Whitney sold cable operated "Y" valves that you could put in a standard exhaust pipe, and operate the valve by pulling on the cable handle (neatly hidden along the side of you seat??). I installed one on a friends 283 Impala. Lots of noise. No power.

On the other hand, there are mufflers with effective tip inserts, that quiet the exhaust by 5-6 db (quite a bit, actually). These mufflers are used in places where different tracks require certain noise limits. Easy to do. Works well.

Not as slick as throwing a switch, though.

Heh, these are quite common in the F-Body (Camaro/Firebird) world. I used to have one on a couple of my Camaros, however, I was never a fan of the QTP model. The original, and IMHO, still the best is: http://www.mccordcg.com/mpp/mpp.htm

In any event, get a WRX exhaust and a custom (catless) downpipe. Your dad will never know you changed the exhaust. :)

Tell your dad that it's your car, and you want to do this.

Explain the gas mileage benefits, and that it's not THAT loud.

My car, while being loud under WOT, is fairly sedate at idle and partial throttle.

I still want a cutout or something though, just so I can shoot flames out the side of my car.

Or maybe he should respect his fathers wishes seeing as how he's still being supported by him, and just live with a quiet exhaust. You wont die from it.
