Plastic coolant tank question

Post by Cliff2.2 »

Is it ok to remove its cap once the car has cooled down?

Yes. It's just like the radiator cap on a typical car. It's the primary fill point for the whole cooling system.

Keep in mind, though, that repeated removals and reinstallations will eventually wear out the rubber gaskets on the cap. In my experience, aftermarket caps' gaskets wear out a lot faster than OEM ones.

When you guys talk about using the WRX coolant tank, is it this one?: Image

Is it a direct fit?

That's the coolant overflow resivoir, it may or not fit.

The wrx coolant tank is this:

I saw that but didn't see a part number for it. Anyone have the part number?

Is the tank I posted equivalent to our plastic coolant tank that always breaks? I know it's not a direct fit, but is it the same concept?

No, the one Thawa posted and Vikash gave the part number for is the equivalent to the black one that always breaks on our cars.

Cliff,
I just replied to your PM. I forgot you were looking for this part. Since the wagon is now a part out, I have one for you. Call me and we'll just add it to the price for your steering rack and you can pick it up this weekend...

Sweet. This part is going to be the prototype for a metal one I'm going to have my brother try to make. Possibly with different mounting brackets so it could be relocated.

Sweet deal just keep in mind if your goal is to go TMIC then you have to relocate the tank.

I have a WRX intercooler that I'm putting in it so I will be relocating the tank. I'm hoping that I can find a smaller windshield washer resevoir at the u-pull-it junkyard and mount something next to it.

I moved my battery to the trunk and I'm using a WRX coolant tank. It's a major pain in the ass to fill, but it does it's job OK from what I can tell, lol.

I think the tank is fine where it is for a TMIC, it's the location of the nipples that gets in the way and break off. If you make one with the nipples all coming out the side not the back it would be fine and won't take all the work of relocating it and running hose.

This is the main reason why I got a WRX coolant tank. It is metal and not frail.

Back from the dead for a stupid question... Is there any different steps to installing the metal WRX one versus the plastic OEM one? Thanks
