Strange sound with clutch out

Post by Threshld1 »

So ive noticed lately a not so nice sound coming from my tranny at idle. With the clutch out i can hear what sounds like a bearing starting to wear with a constant spinning sound. This has happened since i got the car. As of late it has started to make a clicking sound, almost like the sound an exhaust leak would make a put put put sound. It goes away with the clutch in though.

Ive also noticed a lot more chatter from the tranny and diff when going into gear like the clutch isnt grabbing right away. But im fairly sure the clutch isnt slipping. I can stick it in 5th going 30 and get full boost and the rpms only rise with speed.

Ive noticed excessive play between the cv's and the tranny up front aswell. i can turn 1 wheel nearly 1/4 turn before the other side will respond.

Is my input shaft bearing going? Time to get myself a new tranny?

Hmm, sounds like you might have a bearing problem for sure. Likely the input shaft front main bearing.

That wouldn't explain the wheel spinning problem, which I could only attribute to potential improper gear lash setup or perhaps simply play in very worn axles.

Has the transmission ever been rebuilt?

as far as i know no just the origional 160k miles with a previous owner that weighed 400lbs the accomplished in breaking many things. Is it something a fairly experienced person could do themselves? where would one find rebuild parts?

The sound isn't a light squeaking is it?

Before you condemn you tranny, maybe it's just the throwout bearing?

+1 on the throwout bearing. Mine makes the clicking noise, squeaks when you push it in a little, and then makes no noise when in all the way. The mechanic said it was the TOB.

Hmmm sounds exactly like it. I have noticed in the last week, with the car off and i push the clutch in for start, it makes a squeek for 1/4 of the stroke. Once the car is on it will not squeek. Maybe a strange chirp here and there after heavy driving and thats when the clicking ("exhaust type") sound will come. There was a very bad squeek sound that would come at idle but it was not related to clutch possition. Replaced my water pump and idler pulleys and it went away.

The only reason im concerned for the entire tranny is both my front cv and rear drive shaft have excessive off axis play, in out, + and - deg off center play also. It is very evident with on and off throttle, the entire car will buck HARD.

Back to the throwout bearing would this be something worth dropping the tranny to do? how hard would it be to do my rear seal at the same time? is there anything else i should look at doing at the same time? can i do it with the motor still in the car or would it have to come out?
