Getting a turbo - what to do?

That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

Getting a turbo - what to do?

Post by Scandinavianflick »

So, I'm getting a turbo from a GT Impreza (EDM) for about 200 usdollars (15.000 Icelandic Kronur). The problem is that I don't know alot about this kind of thing and I'm far from being a mechanic myself.

The question is: What should I do to my engine and drivetrain so it will cope with all the extra oomph?
Will I need alot of parts (that cost a fortune) to strengthen the engine? Will the extra power destroy my gearbox (it's a manual)? It's a 2.2 non turbo (EDM) driven about 230.000 kms (140.000 miles).

I hope you can help me, I'm quite excited about this. :-D

I'm just trying to get some information out of you guys, I think most of you know more about this subject than I do and therefore can you probably help me. I can find the parts myself but I need some information regarding what I should be worried about when I insert the turbo.

Yes, Please use the Search function. It is your friend. Also, check over @ nasioc.com, as they specialize in Imprezas and many of them have done conversions.

good luck

FYI the turbo itself is the cheapest part of what you are trying to do - i.e. boost a N/A motor.

Not only will all the required small parts be quite a bit more money, but there is a lot of work and research involved.

Look for threads in N/A turbo add-ons on NASIOC and RS25.com

Good luck if you decide to go all the way with it.

You need minimum

Borla header style header
custom uppipe.
bigger injectors and/or FMU(rrfpr)
piggyback like a PP6 or Emanage
intercooler

Thats JUST for 4-6 psi...

Afterthat you need to replace the pistons for any sense of reliability.

Lets just say i was going to do the same thing as you with my 94gt wagon non-turbo. i payed like 125 for my turbo and pipes and stuff then i got into everything else... Such as oil lines, adapter, silicone pipes, ecu, and just the skill to do it all. I finally just gave up there is alot more to a stock turbo car then a non turbo. I just went out and bought a turbo car. Save you a bunch of money!!!!

I know this will be quite a challenge, me and my wallet are up to it this summer. Thanks for the warning anyways.
