Transmission won't go into 5th gear?

Post by ijr »

I just picked up a 93 Legacy turbo with a 5mt swap and it makes a whining noise and will not go into 5th gear. The previous owner said that the transmission is out of a 92 Legacy, but has a 06 WRX gearset in it. The whining sounds like it is coming from the rear, so I'm guessing it the rear diff, but does anyone have any idea what could be causing it to not want to go into 5th. It goes into every other gear just fine, but not 5th. I'm going to tear it down this week, but I wanted to get some ideas before I started.

Thanks for your help!

Hard to say, really... But I'd guess that last bearing on the mainshaft. That sucker caused me to lose 4th though, not 5th.

Was the FD ratio of the differential matched to the tranny when it was swapped?

Yeah, the previous owner said that it has the stock (from a 92 mt Legacy) 4.10 front diff and a rear diff from a late 90s Impreza with 4.10 gears also.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah it does go into reverse. Makes an ever worse whine though

Reverse is noisy because the gears are square cut. You sure it's not just a bent or misaligned fork? That fork would slide R into the correct position while the 5th gear side could be hosed...
