97-forestor EJ20G swap

Post by fatgc8 »

ok guys so i been doing a lot of researching on the jdm ej20gs going in bc legacys for some time now and i finally bit the bullet and ended up ordering everything from JHOT. My question for everyone is i have a 91 bc ss with a auto tranny and if i were to drop the ej20g in and use all existing ecu, and wiring harness from the ss would problems am i going into run into going this route and how do i solve them. To my understanding everything plugs right in with the 20gs and i am keeping the auto in the car in till i get funds for a 5spd.I know that there are a lot of people here that did the swap and I just wanted to know what were some of the problems people run into when doing the ej20g with using the existing ss ecu and harness so any type of help would be greatly appreciated.

Off the top of my head, you'll run into issues with the injectors being different size, ignition system being coil on plug, and possibly a different size MAF sensor.

Hey Legacy777 this specific 20g is not a coil on plug ignition system. I also have a Jecs MAF to plug into if i run into problems with the MAF. Im in the process of trying to figure out if i can use the revtronix to tune this car.

If the engine is from a Forester it's OBD-II...and is by no means a plug and play with your Legacy.

You are going to have to source an EJ20K body harness, or one compatible with it, because it has a lot of incompatibilities with the EJ22T stuff.

The motor is really similar in terms of the ignition system, iac, etc so im in the process of replacing the ej20g engine harness and putting my ej22t engine harness to plug in to the exsisting ej22t ecu and the rest of the harness. I replaced all the sensors that are on the ej20g with sensors from the ej22t like the cam sensor, knock sensor, coolant temp sensor, etc Has anyone done this?

I'm in the process of doing it right now. Been a work in a progress for quite a while. I don't have time to go into detail but check out my build thread in my signature.

I believe I replaced the cam and crank sensors with EJ22T sensors, use my EJ22T throttle body and TPS mounted upsidedown which requires you build a spacer or buy one from a company like GroupA for heaps of money so the EJ22T TPS clears the manifold. You'll see, it's documented in my build thread. I made a hybrid harness with the forester one and the EJ22T one.

There's tons of little things that get in the way that you'd never think of.

That said, mine isn't running yet. Good luck!
