Ok guys, I have had a knocking/ticking noise for a while and decided enough is enough. I suspect it is the lifters making the noise. I have read a few topics on it and learned a little bit on how to do it but I couldn't find a video showing how to bleed HLA's. So I went ahead and took some videos and pictures step by step on how to do it. Here's what I came up with:

I've been putting off doing this to my ss but have done it before on a previous legacy L model. Thanks for posting this up and with great results too.

Very nice tutorial, thanks for sharing!
Another way to bleed them is to use a 10mm socket. They fit in the socket and you can pour a little bit of oil in the other end of the socket, press the ball check valve and press the lifter up and down a couple times to bleed the air out.
I'll add this to the engine forum sticky thread.

Re: How to fix lifter noise on an EJ22T
Its real easy to do as well. It took me longer because I took the time to take pictures and videos but if I was to just go for it would only take about an hour each side. Its one of the easiest you can do and get good results. Good luck, hope your results are as good as mine......SiCkSTi04 wrote:I've been putting off doing this to my ss but have done it before on a previous legacy L model. Re: How to fix lifter noise on an EJ22T
Thanks Josh...I'll use a 10mm socket next time. After driving it around a bit I still have a bit of noise, but its way better. I made one mistake, I didn't check all the HLA's like I should have. Only had 2 that seemed bad which I bled and replaced. Should have checked the other six to double check they were good, they seemed bled and solid but I should have performed the bleeding procedure on them to see that they pumped smoothly. I might do the procedure again and double check the other 6 since its not that bad of a job. I also plan to do an oil change, I was told to use Rotella T6 5W-40 Synthetic but it seems a bit on the light side. The temps here in NM don't get that low, might see zero a few times a season but mostly in the 20's at night. I know Rotella is a great oil but after reading several posts it seems this could be a factor for noise as well. Its seems the oil of choice is Mobil1 10W-30, so I will change to that and see how it goes.Legacy777 wrote:Very nice tutorial, thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I would definitely suggest bleeding all of them, plus with using the 10 mm socket it orients them so the bleed hole is at the top so as long as their good, you should not have any air in there.

Yea I recall it being a pretty straight job. I also have a full sandwich bag full of spare lifters.oleman77 wrote:Its real easy to do as well. Something we used at Lexus was amo packaging to hold the lifters in place and put it in a container where we could just run through all of them real fast.
