i replaced the alternator and that fixed it. i called around a few subie shops in town and they all said check your charging system. sure enough, that's what it was. probably the most frustrating part of this was the fact that some engineer designed this response into the system, except neither suba...

Dash Warning lights won't turn off.....HELP!!

ok, i've never seen or heard of this before...please help i've got a 90 legacy, AT AWD. when you crank the engine over to start, all the dash lights come on just as they should, but when it fires up, all of them stay on EXCEPT the check engine light, which turns off like it should. basically the opp...

wait a minute, cutting the duty C wire trips it into 50/50 split? this is what i have been wanting to do for a while now! i wanna throw a toggle (or tie into that useless manual switch) and give me full awd on demand. any idea if this will reek havoc on the tcu? dude, time to sell the subie and buy ...

loyale tranny into a legacy?

Found a wrecked Loyale down the street. Has the older 5-speed with the 4WD/Hi/Lo lever. I think it's the last year for the hi/lo, relatively new. Would this bolt up to my 90 Legacy wagon's motor? my car's pretty rough, so some custom work to get the levers in wouldn't be a big deal, but I don't know...

BIG PHATTIES

I'm going to get some flack for this, I'm sure, but check it: BFG makes their all terrains in a teeny 215/75/R14 that I want on my 90 wagon. With a slight lift from some coil spacers, do y'all think these would fit? Just FYI, my speedo says I'm going about 7mph faster than I actually am (according t...

777, little testy this morning? :lol: the e-brake scenario was just to illustrate how the two different systems work, mostly for my own understanding. so, yes, they do justify something. and given the fact that all this was done on shear ice, the system didn't see any more stress than normal conditi...

ciper: so then my idea of manually overiding the center clutch (note i didn't use the word differential) with a switch would be the only way a legacy could be true 4 wheel drive(F and R axles locked together)...right? here's another scenerio: when i'm driving my dad's MT legacy and i hit the e-brake...

let the jokes begin...lift kit?

OK, everyone seems to like the lower, better handling look of a performance suspension system, and if i still lived in CA or AZ, i'd be there too. but here in montana, chunks of ice fall off of semi's and can cause some serious damage. when i worked at NAPA i noticed some simple coil spring expander...

vrg3: hey, thanks so much for the useful info. i've been scratching my head for many many moons about this, and then i stumbled on this site. it's great communicating with folks that are familiar with this stuff. it's amazing the number of theories that exist as to just how these cars work... so let...

vrg3: but isn't the solenoid just a hydraulic switch? doesn't it take fluid pressure difference and converts it to a hi/lo electrical signal? i want to bypass it with a toggle switch activated by yours truly. rather than fluid pressure kicking on the clutches, it would be my switch inside (i still t...

rallysam, you are with me. the roads here are almost always snow covered during the winter, and i don't see how AWD could be running all the time, like in the manuals. my dad's 91 legacy MT sedan works perfectly, and i'm convinced the MT's center diff is far superior than this infernal center clutch...

auto tranny AWD convert to part time 4wd?

OK, hear me out. my 90 legacy auto wagon runs great. problem is my AWD seems to work only when it wants too. there is serious delay from when the front wheels break loose to the rear wheels kicking in. when they do, it's awesome. i usually end up doing a 360 or some other non-intentional rally move....
