I had a similar problem turned out I had leaks in the ex manifold pre 02 sensor. Oxygen introduced into the ex manifold will throw the 02 sensor and with our ex arrangment there can be negative pulse passing through it. Uh ok had a real close look at things and a bit of a think and came up with this.
The rearmost exhaust valve isn't quite sealing fully sometimes as is evident by the wetness around the seat which smells of raw fuel.

Hi all,
Just refaced valves and cut seats on an ej20g. and got it all back in and running.
I noticed the motor was shakey and made a chuffing noise before and after this so I removed the exhaust manifold, started it up and got underneath for a looksee at the valves in action. Firstly..... VERY loud ...

I got it abck together last night (worked into the wee smalls actually) :mrgreen:
I had a good look into the upper assembly that was still in the car and it became apparent where those 3 springs go.
As a note of interest the valve body wasnt even torqued-the bolts were finger tight ...

Does anyone have the exploded veiws or infomation on the valve bodies in the 4eat.
In particular the position of the 3 springs in the accumulators in the upper valve body. I have photos but dont know how to get them hosted.

I unplugged the tcu for 10 mins to clear all codes then plugged back in and went for drive-same problem 3rd gear as usual.

Vehicle- 92 gt legacy wagon 4eat 169k
Problem:
Start car hot or cold. When placed into drive it sits in 3rd and stays there no matter what.
Switch off try again- same thing- however,
if I drive off and shift to neutral while moving, switch off and restart, place back into drive all gears ...
