Yeah, its not bad. I did mine over the course of a couple days (including water pump) after work (2 hours ish each day) The only gotcha is if you have a DOHC motor (you didnt specify your vehicle), its a little more fiddly to prevent valve damage. But on the SOHC motor, you have to try really hard t...

Rags or a hose and some simple green should do the trick

That leak is coming from up north, I don't think its the rack.

I replaced the boots, they're not bad. Inspect the rack shaft for fluid leakage. If you don't see any leakage and the steering feels solid, you should be ok in terms of rack damage. You have to remove the outer tie rod to get the boot over the rod, so you should consider replacing those while you ha...

Adding cruise control

I have a 1992 Legacy NA auto. It does not have cruise control.

Can I add it? What parts do I need?

mine were terrible, i could hold the stud on the passenger side and just sling the joint around, no resistance at all

it made a world of difference in the steering and handling

The steering boots are HORRIBLE to get over the lip, too. At one point I thought it would be easier just to replace the whole rack.

Pickleforks are evil!

This week I'm catching up on a lot of maintenance on my car. I did: * both balljoints * both tie rod ends * both steering rack boots * master cylinder Lots of rust, lots of PB Blaster, and the right tools and everything came out ok. But I rented a picklefork to get the balljoints and the ends off, a...

I misstated my original post, I left the COMPRESSOR off and it ran unbalanced. It runs fine with no compressor BELT.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong, but I tried to leave my compressor belt off when I replaced the timing belt because my AC does not work either.

However, when I started it up again, the engine shook something fierce like it was unbalanced. I put the belt back on and it ran just fine.

Cleaning engine (to find oil leak)

What is the best way to clean up the oil crud on the engine in my 92 Legacy NA? I'm trying to find a moderate oil leak. I lose about half a quart every 200 miles, and it's clearly destined for my driveway. I've replaced the timing belt and water pump, and while all the front was off, I inspected the...

If the dash gauge for engine temp reads normally, does that indicate a healthy coolant temp sensor?

I've done plugs and wires since I've owned it.

278k miles.

If it idles rough after warming up, it will act funny at idle until the engine cools down again. And then you get to roll the dice again to see if it will act up.

It only seems to do it after warming up, and sometimes it will warm up and idle fine. Probably 2 of 3 times warmed up, it idles roughly. I've owned the car for 9 months, and it always did it to some degree. But it seems to have worsened recently to the point where it bothers me enough to do somethin...

Rough idle

I have a 92 NA wagon that idles roughly. It bounces around from 400 to 700 rpm when stopped.

Any suggestions on things I can test to try and figure out what the cause of the problem is?

Not for sure.

But it's definitely not from the front of the engine. There was a little belt dust, but inside the timing cover was very clean.

After spending the time poking at it, the leaking seems to be pretty close to the rear main. :(

Yea, I tried that before all the work and it didn't seem to help.

I did also do it after flushing and filling.

Learned my lesson

After spending all week doing the water pump R&R, my Legacy was still overheating. So I flushed the radiator with some of the corrosion cleaner, it came out nice and gross. I guess at least I know now when the timing belt was changed and I learned a lot about the front of my engine and how much ...

Ok, I got everything off. The camshaft seals, crankshaft seals, and oil pump area are quite dry, so I don't think my oil leaks are coming from there. Most of the oil looks to be further back on the engine. The pulleys and tensioner are strong and don't really show any signs of wear or wobble. I'm go...

Thanks for the info! I saw a mention of external oil leaks caused by the oil pump, would that leak from the front of the engine? I do have a decent amount of oil leakage. What kind of skill level would you say replacing the crank seals, cam seals, and oil pump parts rates? From A-F (bad), I'm probab...

Water pump replacement and?

I'm pretty new to my Subaru, bought a 92 with a ton of miles on it last year for $800 and it has been great. However, I need to replace my water pump now. After some examination, it appears I need to remove the timing belt and all the accessory belts to get to the water pump. I've read some stuff ab...
