So, I got really tired of that damned SSQV whistle, and realized that the piece that creates it is just an insert sandwiched in between a rubber seal and the outer casing.

8 allen screws (2.5 mm heads) later and it's out, putting the BOV back together reveals that only 4 of the screws hold the casing on, the other 4's heads pass through the casing and just hold the seal onto the valve itself. Pretty nifty design, even just on the outer casing.

They sell a purple insert that replaces the factory silver one, that doesn't have the turbulent parts in the airflow - so therefore no whistle. They also have a gold insert for aesthetics, with zero sound difference from the silver. But instead of dropping $25 on one of these inserts, I found that the unit goes back together quite nicely without any insert whatsoever.

I will be driving around town shortly and will see how it sounds... it's GOTTA be better than before

Update: sounds WAY better. I no longer yearn for my Type S. Now I've got all the advantages of the pull-type BOV and none of the signature SSQV whistle

do you drive the car with the headligts/corner lights not fastened in, like in the picture. Don't they fall out at highway speeds

Cool bov indeed! Hmmm, I never noticed a fmic when the stock airbox was still used. The piping looked like quite a chore to run. Is it all 3" exhaust type pipe. and did you just ditch you washer bottle?

What makes you think the headlights aren't attached, other than the fact that the stock mounts aren't used in the traditional sense...?

No really I had to space the headlights out to make room for the FMIC, and then re-secured them using a combination of straps of metal, bolts, mechanics wire, and zip ties (of course). Took a few tries to get them secured but they're not going anywhere.

Oh and the FMIC piping is 2.5" press-bent exhaust piping, the entire project used less than a single 7' $35 section (with a couple 90* bends in it). It was not easy to do but I'm very pleased with the results.

I removed the washer pump from the original bottle, purchased a $9 Ford washer bag from eBay, and hung it behind the passenger side headlight with zip ties. Mounted the pump slightly below and behind the bag and ran the tubes, and I've got windshield pissers again. Also poked a safety pin into the nozzles and now all 4 sprays operate. Woohoo!

Chris - HKS makes a recirc kit for the SSQV. I don't remember much about it, but I believe it's a whole replacement outer cover. You can keep the whistle, AND recirc the BOV, or you can use the purple silencer kit.

I THINK their "racing" version (that's rated to 49psi) comes standard with this recirc. adapter.

Yeah, I was looking at the recirc adapter, and am planning on at some point getting one on general principle. Either way though the stock whistle was just too much for normal driving, I'd imagine even with a recirc kit on there the whistle would still drown out the engine on light shifts

And just for the record, all the purple silencer kit does is remove the element directly in the path of the escaping air that causes the whistle, and you can just remove it yourself without putting the useless purple insert in afterwards for the same results. Thereby saving $20 or so.

But yeah gotta love the quality of this valve... that was the feature that initially caught my interest, that was rated to hold like 50 psi of pressure with no leaks. Pull-type BOVs rule!

Edit: that photo link you posted must be of an older SSQV - it's got an adjustment bolt on the left side!

I have this BOV on my GSX. The whistle is completely eliminated when the recirc kit is installed. The recirc kit is pretty much a hose and a sleeve that slides into the BOV in place of the purple or gold fitting.

How does the car run with the BOV vented?

Seems to run fine vented -- I had trouble with my Type S leaking after a blowoff at idle, not closing properly... but the SSQV has given me no issues. Just works.

I actually had better luck with the TypeS than with the SSQV. That is, after Vikash and I reverse engineered it and figured out how you are SUPPOSED to set it up! What a pain in the ass!

My SSQV had the adjustment bolt, yours doesn't?

I guess mine was an older one then. Doesn't really bother me though. I hated the noise and it caused more problems than my TypeS.

I'd almost go on the limb to say the Type S and the SSQV are two of the better BOV's available.
