8 allen screws (2.5 mm heads) later and it's out, putting the BOV back together reveals that only 4 of the screws hold the casing on, the other 4's heads pass through the casing and just hold the seal onto the valve itself. Pretty nifty design, even just on the outer casing.
They sell a purple insert that replaces the factory silver one, that doesn't have the turbulent parts in the airflow - so therefore no whistle. They also have a gold insert for aesthetics, with zero sound difference from the silver. But instead of dropping $25 on one of these inserts, I found that the unit goes back together quite nicely without any insert whatsoever.
I will be driving around town shortly and will see how it sounds... it's GOTTA be better than before
