PICs and Numbers from my visit to the Dyno

Post by macipusy »

I just got back from a shop that has a dyno....I took some pics, as best as I could....they make you stand outside the bay. I snuck a couple from the inside....hehe

Here is my one month old to me 91 SS with the following engine performance mods....

LW Pulley set
TBE-Invidia 3” bellmouth catless DP, Borla 2.5” CBE - 4” singletip
Custom straight Intake with ‘mug shot’ and JC sports cone filter
Hallman MBC
Ground Mod

Max Power: 177.7 AWHp @ 5400 RPM
Peak Torque: 198.4 ft-lb @ 3900 RPM

The guy at the shop was like....wow, I am surprised at these numbers.....especially since stock WRX is like 160 awhp

I know what you mean 92SS....I was going mad to know what it wasfor sure. I was telling people that estimated hp was like 230-250 chp...dependong on my mood for psi....12-14ish

The responses were usuaally laughs and smirks.....

Now I got paper proof...I will scan my printouts and post them for analysis... :-)

Yes stock wrx is 230hp... to the crank. Not to the wheels.

Macipusy they may or may not be adjusted. I'd ask the shop that dyno'd you and ask them. If not have them adjust the numbers for sea level because it gives you a better knowledge base to know what you'd compare to.

kinda reviving this thread.
so macipusy, you said you're running ~12 psi. is that on the stock turbo and no intercooler?

i was running around, 10-12 psi with no intercooler but i only run premium fuel. was fun, till the clutch decided to not want to hold the power anymore.

hmmm ok. i'm just asking because i have an 06 wrx intercooler but i was planning on installing it after i get my new turbo. BUT i'd still like to run more than stock boost.

i've read numerous posts where some people say they run 12 psi just fine and then others say that running much more than 10 psi w/o an intercooler is dangerous and can cause detonation and what not.

so is there a definite answer to this?

Depends on: the fuel system, engine management, milage and the overall condition of the motor.

Do you have a way to monitor AFR's?

Personally, I'd install the i/c before turning up the boost. Especially on a higher milage stock motor.

Ok...I will put the "how much boost, etc" inquiries to rest...

Running anything more than 10psi w/o intercooler is not a good idea...in fact, in my personal opinion, running anything over stock boost without a charge cooler is a bad idea.

The VF11 runs out of efficiency right around 12psi...so, running it any higher will just heat up the engine and your intercooler and not really make more power

Just intercool it...with the low cost of WRX intercoolers these days, you are silly not to!
