Ru's build
Engine:
CP pistons 8.5:1 compression
eagle rods
acl race bearings
2.5 dohc heads
2000ish legacy intake manifold
550 cc injectors
perrin pulley
Front mount intercooler
power steering, AC and ABS removed
Garrett t3/t4 50 trim turbo
Exhaust:
3" stainless steel TBE
external wastegate with external dump
Drivetrain:
4.11 manual transmission
sti short throw shifter
fidanza flywheel
ACT sprung ceramic clutch
Suspension:
front strut tower bar
Tein S-tech springs
WRX struts
Electronics:
Fuel cut defencer
plug and play Apex'i safc II
misc:
autometer cobalt wideband, oil pressure and boost gauge
indiglo dash gauges
greddy bov
electrical tape over the turbo awd badge on the back
I decided to change out the sohc turbo heads for the 2.5L dohc so I ordered some CP pistons made for 8.5:1 compression with the matchup.
Then i had to go through the heads and reshim them.
The intake manifold has 550 top feed injectors from an RX7
One of my friends was nice enough to come over and pull the old engine and transmission out for me cause I'm not strong enough.

I think I like the silver valve cover look. Might try it myself. What kind of paint did you use? I think maybe a gunmetal darker silver paint would be even cooler!

I don't think so. Mine don't look like that. They look like aluminum. Those look painted, recently. The intake manifold looks painted too.

They're painted and its a charcoal color but i'll look up the name next time i'm home.
here are some pics of the turbo rebuild. Need to drill some broken bolts out of the exhaust housing. The surclips that hold the bushings inside were a real pain in the butt to take out and put back in.

Well I was in Europe for the last month and a half so progress on the car was slow. I finished rebuilding the turbo and fabricating parts to make everything work. Today I put the turbo on the engine and the engine in the car...first go it cranked for a while but wouldnt start. Switched the plug wires around and it started right up.
So I need to switch the wires going to the coilpack, i figured they might have been backwards when i hooked them up. It's also running slightly bumpy and when i uplug the front driverside cylinder it shows no difference so I think one of my injectors went bad. I may have some replacements on the way though. I'll post pics when I get more time.

I did do away with the power steering and the a/c a couple years ago. I like it better that way although there are some days i wish i had cool air.
The car runs like a champ now, for the first time in a long time, there's no oil drops anywhere and no smoke of anykind. The pistons are audible on startup but quiet down after a while. Now to finish the break in period for the turbo and the engine and then start tuning it for higher boost.

It's really hard to keep my foot off the gas, I found some boost leaks and fixed them and the car moves pretty quick at 8psi.
The engine doesn't sound as beefy without the delta camshafts, it's more even and business like. I think it quieted the exhaust a little as well.
I don't imagine the transmission will last long once the engine is broken in so I guess i'll be looking for a replacement before too long.

Well it ran well for a couple of months, extremely well at 20psi. Then I was driving along on the interstate and an intake valve snapped. No discoloration from heat, just a mechanical failure. Smashed the hell out of the head but luckily the piston shoved it sideways back into the valve hole. The cylinder walls aren't too bad. The CP piston has a little damage but overall not too bad. The spark plug looks like a banana. I'll post pics soon.

that sucks!! i could only imagine 20 psi out of an engine like that...
hows the steering? are you using a different rack or just drained all the fluid out of the stocker? i'd imagine its not bad in motion but parallel parking and slow maneuvers must suck...
good luck rebuilding!

It was 18 degrees at my house yesterday, she hung around inside by the fire and wouldn't come out once we got there.
I ground down any sharp edges on the piston, measured out the shims for a spare head i had and put it back together, so hopefully it will be back in the car by this evening although its another cold day.
Some new toys I got for the inside since some of the stock speakers are blown
And infinity perfect 6.1's
