Front wheel drive fuse??

I have a question about the FWD fuse undeneath the hood of a 91 turbo sedan 4eat. What's up with that thing. Does it have to have a fuse in it to run at FWD or is it with the out that it runs in FWD???

Oh, and can anyone tell me if in the case of AWD if the rear wheels should turn with the front wheels on the same car mentioned above (91 turbo 4eat)? The reason I ask is because a tech put my 92 NA 5mt sedan up on a lift and showed me how turning one of the wheels makes the others move in unison. Is this only on a standard or what, can anyone help?

The FWD fuse will make the car FWD, it's for diagnostic purposes and whatnot... Youre technically not supposed to drive around with it like that, but why would you anyway? Also a "FWD" light will come on the dash when you put the fuse in. The wheels should all turn.

If you have an owner's manual.....it'll have all the info in there you need.....if not....i've scanned mine for your reading pleasure

Right on, I could probably utilize that scanned version as I'm not sure if the car I'm getting has a manual with it. If it does I'd still want to check it out so I have a back up copy. Is that a .pdf file per chance?

so for the sake of better fuel economy, would driving with this fuse in all the time be likely to do any damage to the drivetrain?

It shouldn't help fuel economy much as you're still moving all those parts.

what about any damage that could be done? and just for interests sake, i changed a constant 4wd to free wheel front hubs on a mitsubishi pajero(in oz) and it made quite a difference to the economy i was getting

There may be a risk of overheating the duty solenoid that regulates MPT clutch lockup.

Overheating the solenoid? I would guess that once that happens, the valve would cease bleeding pressure off, and you'd end up with full front-rear lockup all the time, much like an off-road truck.
