Post by jake15 »

well, i was driving to a car meet last saturday night and i lost a gear... again.... so i took the car apart on sunday and i went from this:

to this

(it has a shift boot now :-) )

started taking the car apart at 10:00 and drove out of the shop around 5:00 (it took a little longer because i had to re-assemble the 6speed (my brother borrowed some parts from it for his impreza). i've been driving it for a week and so far i love driving the car with the 6 speed, especially on the freeway. its nice to be able to cruise at 60 and still be under 3k rpm.

Sweet! Well, that tranny should last at least. ;)

This is why I sold my '92. Two trannies is 9 months was just too much and I couldn't afford a tranny that could hold the p0w3r!!!

The tranny is from a 2004 STi, but you can use any year STi tranny.

good man, Jake

Post by kleinkid »

Starting to think about it. My car has the stock drivetrain, brakes, axles, rear end(lsd), driveshaft, etc. Can you just swap the tranny itself, or do you need the axles, driveshaft, etc.?

And, I will do a good search on this site!

you can swap just the tranny and use an automatic legacy driveshaft, and the shift linkage.

OMG!!
the final drive is 3.9

sadly i havent been able to locate rear hubs/brakes/ ebrake cables at a decent price so it is still running the r160. i dont think i'm going to do the front brembo's because they wont fit under my BBS wheels, so i'll have to find some other big brakes that will fit. but the r180 and rear brembo's are next on the list after the new motor/turbo 8)

Hold up a second, maybe I missed something. Isn't the 6sp STi a 4.44 ratio?

How did you convert it to run 3.9? Because that's gotta be some serious top gear speed.

Are you running a seperate DCCD controller or did that go away when you converted to 3.9?

I'm amazed and confused.

The USDM STI FD is 3.9.

I think only the JDM versions had 4.44 gearing in a 6-speed.

I think that's what he's saying.

I seem to remember the 6-speed is the same length as the 4EAT.

Well I'll be damned. I could have sworn it was 4.44. Riding/driving my friend's 05' seemed short enough to be a 4.44. Hmm...

Jake, you don't mind having to be in 3rd by 60mph? Further, you feel like you are staying in boost long enough?

And awesome 7 hours well spent :).

04-05 STi trannys are 3.9FD and the 06-07 trannys are 3.545FD

i will be running a seperate DCCD controller, it all depends on when i get the funds.

the 4.11 5 speed i had in there before 2nd gear topped out at 50mph, so no i dont mind 8) yeah, the only gear thats not really useful is first. but first never really is that useful, except for getting the car rolling

BC driveshaft?

Jake--The 4eat driveshaft you refer to would be from a BC, correct?

It can be from any 90-99 legacy. just as long as it matches the flange on your rear diff. and if you get one from an outback you have to switch the carrier bearing.

I think when you work at PIA and your dad owns PIA, you start to pick up on little things like that.

Damn. Haha. I wish I had/could afford a 6 speed.

Nice!

I love the label mod.

So without a DCCD controller, it acts as an open differential, right? What's it like driving with an open center diff?
