Re: need help with head gasket....
The longer trip home is mostly steady driving. I will have to look into the jumper thing. And maybe get the alternator checked as well.

Re: Head gasket replacement parts/tool list.
I would say a torque wrench with 12 point socket, and a set of metric 6 points. Both Deep and shallow.
A pulley tool or Big Screwdriver/prybar.
A Small allen wrench to pin out the tensioner.

Re: need help with head gasket....
block wasn't measured but I checked the heads and they looked good. while I had the radiator out I flushed inside with garden hose, and sprayed through the fins of the radiator. I assume the fans run like my honda does, 1 runs off the coolant temp and the other runs with the A/C compressor? correct ...

Re: posr head gasket issue...
well the initial problem I couldn't pull the code because the light would only flicker on the low end of the oscillations. However, after driving it a couple days, the oscillations have subsided greatly and only on initial startup, seems to only fluctuate 200-400 as opposed to the original 1600-1800...

So got the subi back together and filled with coolant after changing the head gaskets, well now it is having this funny idle issue... it idles at like 2.2k for a min or so then it wavers down and up and down and up. The down part rpms fall off almost like it stalled it triggers the cel then jumps ba...

Re: Questions on a headgasket...
I used a 3/8" breaker bar and a 1" combo wrench to break my head bolts loose on my non-turbo. A Couple were a PITA but not too bad.

Re: Mysterious Over Heating
I might suggest a flush just to see what comes out of the coolant passages. I thought I had a blown headgasket but once I pulled the heads, the gaskets looked good, I found sand and shit in the block... WTF right??? that was probably the cause for overheating... also, i hear the thermo is a good thi...

Re: need help with head gasket....
I wanted to pull the engine, but didn't have access to any hoists/cranes. I had access to plenty of stands, so I'm basically just fixing what I can reach. The passenger head wasn't too bad but the drivers side was a PITA to remove and install. gotta try and source the covers soon and for cheap so I ...

WTB: Timing Covers.
During my Head gasket change I noticed that the shop that had changed the timing belt / water pump for the previous owner had broken the covers in several places and just glued them together as their "fix". Well I don't like putting broken stuff back on a vehicle I am fixing. So I am looki...

Re: need help with head gasket....
Thanks forgot to update yesterday, but that's exactly what I did to get them off. But again I have been held up. Heads were off, I resealed the Camshaft ends because It looked like they were seeping oil out, put new head gaskets on and installed the heads hand tight. My torque wrench is a 1/2" ...

Re: need help with head gasket....
Ok got the bolt off using a Big @$$ screwdriver to hold the flex plate while breaking torque with breaker bar. But now I'm stuck again... Is there a trick to removing the pulley? (after the bolt is out of course...)

need help with head gasket....
So I have most everything torn down, except timing cover and components inside. I have a question though: do I need a special tool to keep the crankshaft from spinning while loosening the pulley bolt? Is there another way to get this off? I have been trying everything. Side note: It seems that the s...

Re: My first Subaru...
When you filled & bled the cooling system, did you remove the bleeder screw on the passenger side of the radiator? If you've got steam coming out of the heater vents, it sounds like the heater core may be bad. yes i did, managed to over fill and made a puddle in my garage. And I know the heater...

Re: My first Subaru...
Well, took if for a test drive to work the other day. It's about 10 miles each way. The morning drive (somewhere around 50 deg.) it over heated but stayed below red. On the way home (about 65) it shot up to red, had to stop and let it cool. Well when I stoped I opened the hood here's what I found: n...

You'll find the diagrams for the 90 Legacy, including the fuel gauge wiring here. http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/1990_Legacy_Wiring_Diagrams.zip Looking at the diagram, those colors don't seem to match up with what you're describing. Where is the wiring that you...
