How easily does a later 90s legacy steering rack fit an early 90s? Exact fit? If a 97 works, would a 99? What differences/changes would be necessary to fit.

I need to do this pronto I think, I have a feeling one or both of my inner tie rods are about to crap out.

Unless you find it drives noticeably off (i.e. pulling badly or terrible oversteer) I don't see why not. I'd try to minimise driving, but certainly complete refrain is unnecessary.

Yeah, any consensus here? I'm pretty sure my lousy handling right now is due it a worn rack, although it doesn't leak. If I need to replace it, I'd like to do it well (although necessarily used).

Well, got it aligned, tracks much better now, but still significant issues with being tossed around by cross wind and grooves on the road pulling my wheels. Stills wobbles when at speed and moving the car back and forth quickly. Figure it's got to be the front struts, even if they don't seem to boun...

I now that the rear top mounts from a 1998 outback do not fit a 90-94 legacy. 1997 may be the same. You can probably use your existing topmounts on the new strut assemblies though. BTW, where in Canada are you from. I'm near Toronto (peterborough) and cannot for the life of me find a place with much...

"Has anybody else on here had a bad battery like me? It smelled like rotten eggs."

Yup. But the problem is that the battery goes bad because the alternator cooks it - too much voltage equals a rotten egg battery. Had it happen to me, replaced the battey, same thing start to happen again.

I think I'm going to get some. Only front for now, rears are new but unfortunately Munroes. I'll change them too but for a couple of months.

Recommendations for a place to order from? I'm near Toronto Ontario in Canada, and shipping is a bit more for me here.

KYB GR-2s and stock springs - worthwhile?

What is your take on using KYB gr-2 struts with stock springs? I don't want a harsh ride. But I wouldn't mind a little less body roll. I don't want stiffened/shortened springs, I'd like to keep my clearance. PLus I'm nearly broke ;)

Okay, $1600 is insane. I would never go to that mechanic again for anything, you are being seriously ripped off. Listen to these guys here, they are extremely knowledgable and giving great information. Sounds like you're fairly green, no worries, I'm not much better. Gotta start somewhere. I'd recom...

Shimmy Shimmy Shake

I am tired of my ongoing handling issues. I had the air suspension and swapped in used springs and new struts in the rear. Somewhat used struts in front. Seem to have lots of dampening left when hitting bumps and whatnot. Before swap ride was crap but solid (more or less). Afterwards, problems (list...

When failing that automatic levelling system is a real PITA. Whenever I had a heavy load in the back of my wagon that suspension would rise and stiffen immensely, which was good with the load. But once I removed the load, the car took forever to release the extra pressure (days sometimes), and it wa...

Well, I foudn the reason for the popping noises. The nut and bolt connecting the top of the endlink to the sway bar was hand-loose. Guess I didn't tighten quite enough. No problem, all taken care of. My handing is much better than before, but still feels off. It may very well be the used struts and ...

Nice! MAkes removal of the bolt later on much easier I imagine. I had the air suspension on my legacy and it was causing me mucho grief, so I bought used strut assemblies and replaced the two rear struts with new ones, used the two front used ones (low mileage, met guy through UMSB). That's when my ...

The line that runs from my power steering pump just to the left of it has a tiny bit of sticky fluid on it, but the level is good and hasn't changed for since I've owned it (11 months). Maybe the pump is dying. I hear a loose bearing from up front (I think), and thought it might be the alternator. M...

They were definitely flush into the steering knuckle. I'll double check the pinch bolt tightness though. I didn't torque them too hard because the haynes manual suggested torque values of 15 to 20 lb/ft. I figured that wasn't too tight. Handling seems fine, better than before. I suspect the popping ...

Stiff Steering and popping noises

I just finished putting new ball joints on my 92 legacy, first time I've ever done this. Went well overall, a little bit of frustration trying to remove things, but all went in fine. Problem now is thta my steering seems rather stiff and I hear popping noises from the front end (passenger mostly) wh...

At leats now those bolts will be a little easier to remove next time. When you put it back together proper, use some anti-seize on the bolts. Makes life a lot easier later on!

Well, about after I posted this yesteday, I decided to take a drive to see how it moved at higher rpms. It lacked power throughout the range even if it smoothed out. the hesitation was a consistent thing while driving, not jerky intermittant cuts. However, after a few minutes of driving with a heavy...

rough idle and odd hesitation

92 subaru legacy auto NA I try to start my car, and it takes quite a number of turns and a little gas to do so. Then, it idles very roughly, feels like it's missing. It hesitates upon acceleration. Once the RPMs are at 2000 and above, it runs smooth again. I tried pulling spark plug wires to see if ...

Top mounts on 99 leg OB - different than 90-94

Ok, I just went down to the wreckers and pulled the rear struts off a 99 legacy outback. Look great, everything went well, I was proud of myself for such a neat job done. I bought them, and left them at the counter while I put my tools back into my car. On a whim I decided to measure the top bolt pa...
